Southampton's Anthony Pulis is on his way back to full fitness as he looks towards making his debut for the club.

The 24-year-old midfielder joined the Saints in the summer on a two-year deal from Stoke, but a broken foot has meant he has not yet played a first-team game.

Pulis played for Southampton's reserves on Monday and is now looking towards his full debut.

"It was good, it's been a while - I've been out for three months and I was itching to get back," he said. "It's been a frustrating two years.

"Any player will tell you the worst thing about being a footballer is being injured.

"I had an ongoing thigh problem at Stoke, but I got through that.

"Then I got through all the pre-season games and got the foot injury.

"Now I'm back it makes me appreciate being fit and playing so much more.

"I know it's going to take a few weeks but hopefully I can challenge for a place, although it will be difficult, as there are a lot of good midfielders at the club."

Failed appeal

Meanwhile, Southampton have failed with their bid to overturn Jason Euell's red card.

Euell was sent off against Wolves at the weekend after a challenge on Richard Stearman, and the Saints lodged an appeal.

However, The Football Association have rejected the appeal.

Head coach Jan Poortvliet said: "We are disappointed by the ruling but accept the FA's decision."
