Bryan Gunn has made his first signing as Norwich manager with the loan capture of Sheffield United midfielder David Carney.

The Australian international has joined the Canaries on loan until the end of the season after dropping down the pecking order at Bramall Lane.

Carney, 25, has been frustrated at his lack of first-team football at Bramall Lane this season having made just one appearance in the Carling Cup all term and he is looking forward to his spell at Carrow Road.

"I'm delighted to be joining a club such as Norwich - the club is obviously in a position they shouldn't be and hopefully I can do something to help move the team up the table," Carney told the club's official website.

Gunn believes Carney will prove to be a valuable addition to the squad as he looks to guide the side to safety in the Championship.

"I am delighted to welcome David as my first signing. We've been working very hard behind the scenes and putting several phone calls into different clubs and this is the first one with a positive result.

"He is an Australian international and I feel he will add something very positive to the squad we already have."

Target

Norwich are also thought to be chasing Cardiff defender Darren Purse to bolster their backline.

Purse has fallen out of favour at Ninian Park and the former Birmingham man is believed to be keen on a move away.

The experienced defender is out of contract in the summer and Cardiff could decide to sell rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer.
