Wolves have been hit with a body blow with the news Michael Kightly will miss the remainder of the season with a broken metatarsal.

The Championship leaders are closing on promotion to the Premier League but will now have to do so without their influential winger, after he suffered the injury in a friendly against Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

Kightly fell awkwardly in a challenge with Shrewsbury's goalkeeper and as a result broke a metatarsal in his left foot.

"I jumped over the keeper and just fell awkwardly when I planted my foot," he told the club's official website.

"It's the sort of challenge you go in for day-in day-out in training or in a game but yesterday obviously just wasn't my day.

"The toe's now got to be pinned and I'll have to have an operation which hopefully will be as soon as possible.

Devastated

"If everything goes as well as we hope and we end up getting promoted then I'll have missed out on all the excitement and the celebrating.

"Having played almost every game, and made 39 starts, to miss it now when it's all so important just makes it even worse."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy offered his sympathy to Kightly but feels his squad has enough depth to cope in his absence.

"It's really disappointing both for Kights and for the team," he added.

"Of course it's a blow but unfortunately it's part of football.

"We've got players who can come in and it looks like Jarvo (Matt Jarvis) will be back in training tomorrow."
