Middlesbrough new boy Danny Coyne insists he has not joined the club simply to settle for a place on the bench.

Coyne has signed a two-year contract at the Riverside to link up with the Championship club on a free transfer from Tranmere Rovers.

He will help to fill the void created by Ross Turnbull's decision to sign for Chelsea and will vie with Brad Jones to be Boro's first choice.

And the 35-year-old is adamant that he will not be happy to merely provide cover for Jones, stating he wants to fight for a first-team place.

"I'm here to make competition, that's why the manager brought me in," said Coyne.

"I'm not going to just come here and be happy to sit on the bench. I want to play like everybody else, but I'm not going to moan about it if I don't.

"I'll just work that much harder to try to get in and if that helps Brad along the way, then great.

"It's all about competition for places and like we keep saying, the main aim is promotion as a squad."
