Watford captain Jay DeMerit has undergone surgery on the freak eye injury he suffered last month.

The Hornets defender has been out of action since facing Plymouth at Home Park on 15th September.

The American centre-half saw a piece of grit get stuck under his contact lens during that game and the area has since become infected.

Despite taking strong antibiotics in an effort to cure the ailment, the problem has not improved and the decision was taken to send DeMerit for an operation.

He went under the knife in London on Saturday and is expected to be sidelined for a further two months.
