Veteran Gary Speed admits he may have played his last game in professional football.

The Sheffield United midfielder has not played since undergoing surgery on his troublesome back last season, and at the age of 40, time is not on his side.

"I see the lads running in training and I'm not sure I can do it anymore," Speed told The Daily Mail.

The former Wales international has been continuing with his coaching role at Bramall Lane while nursing himself back to fitness.

Speed has excelled in the role and was linked with the manager's job at Swansea in the summer.

And the former Newcastle man admits returning to the Blades side is not imperative to him.

He added: "I'm forty, I haven't played for a year and you can take what you want from that. I'm not missing playing because I'm enjoying the other side so much."
