Laws: Not happy
You can't carry one player let alone 10. I would have put on all seven subs if I could.
Brian Laws.
Quotes of the week
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws hopes the performance of his side in the heavy defeat to West Brom was a one-off, while Roberto Di Matteo was left smiling.
The Baggies maintained pace with Newcastle at the top of the Championship as a Simon Cox brace and goals from Jerome Thomas and Chris Brunt earned a 4-0 win.
Laws was unimpressed with the display of his struggling players in the Hillsborough mauling and blasted the squad for losing their way.
He said: "You have to be at your best to beat a side like West Brom, but we made them look very good today.
"I thought for the first 20 minutes, we were pretty even but the first goal (in the 22nd minute) sapped the strength from the players and then our passing went astray."
Captain Tommy Spurr was substituted soon after the third goal went in, and it was not long before Jermaine Johnson and top scorer Marcus Tudgay were hauled off too.
Laws added: "You can't carry one player let alone 10. I would have put on all seven subs if I could. I think that's one of the worst performances we have put in.
"We have to make it a one-off. We have a huge game coming up against Reading and it's all out to get three points.
Di Matteo said: "Can you write that I am smiling as otherwise I get accused of never smiling? I believe that if you play well over the long term then you should get results.
"Today we put in another great performance, and really we managed to finish off the game in the first half with the third goal.
"I have been here for five months and I still believe there is a lot of work to do, but I don't think we are doing too badly.
"Newcastle have a budget of £45million and we are only two points behind them."
Di Matteo even had time to throw on Albion's youngest debutant since Charlie Wilson when 16-year-old George Thorne came on for the final few minutes.
The Italian said: "He is still young, but he has showed a bit of potential and we will keep monitoring him. He has trained with us and we thought we would give him a little go."
