Ipswich Town striker Jon Stead must serve a four-match suspension after failing in his appeal against his sending-off at Crystal Palace.

Stead was dismissed during the Boxing Day defeat at Selhurst Park following a challenge on Freddie Sears towards the end of the first half.

Town boss Roy Keane accused the Palace players of helping to get Stead sent off, while Neil Warnock acknowledged the red card was harsh.

An appeal was lodged against the dismissal and that allowed Stead to play in Monday's 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers during which he grabbed a brace.

However, an independent regulatory commission has rejected the appeal and has added an extra game on top of the mandatory three-match suspension.

A Football Association statement read: "Stead appealed against the decision, citing wrongful dismissal, but this was rejected by the commission.

"The striker will now receive a four-match ban, increased by one game and starting with immediate effect, as the commission felt the claim had no prospect of success."

The ban will rule Stead out of Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie against Blackpool and the upcoming Championship games against Leicester, Coventry and West Brom.
