Rochdale boss Keith Hill has rejected reports that teenage defender Craig Dawson could join Scunthorpe United in a £250,000 deal.

Dawson has been linked with a January switch to Glanford Park after creating a major splash in his first season in professional football.

The 19-year-old only made his debut for Dale at the start of the campaign, but he has gone on to score nine goals in 28 appearances.

Hill is determined to hang on to the promising centre-half and believes that, if Dawson does leave Spotland, it will be for a bigger club than Scunthorpe.

"I think it is just a bit of mischief-making to be honest," said Hill in the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph.

"I am taking my coaching badge with Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins and speak with him regularly.

"I know Scunthorpe have been a good stepping stone for young players, but with all due respect to them, Craig is a better player than Scunthorpe United.

"If he does make a move from here it will be to a higher club."
