Joey Barton is on the Newcastle comeback trail after playing 45 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The former England international has spent almost six months on the sidelines after breaking a bone in his foot in the 3-1 league victory over Plymouth on 19th September.

The 27-year-old played in the first half of a 4-1 victory over Hibernian at the Magpies' Darsley Park training headquarters on Monday as he attempts to regain full fitness for what remains of his side's Championship promotion push.

Manager Chris Hughton was on hand to watch the midfielder, who has made just six senior appearances this season, as well as fellow first-team squad members Tim Krul, Ryan Taylor, Fitz Hall, Nile Ranger and Leon Best go through their paces.
