Portsmouth's newest signing Ibrahima Sonko has confirmed he was the subject of a late bid from Championship rivals Bristol City.

Pompey lined up a season-long loan move for the Stoke defender, although it was delayed due to the club's transfer embargo.

The Robins matched Pompey's offer for the 29-year-old Senegal international, but he ultimately opted for a move to Fratton Park.

Sonko has thanked Steve Coppell for his interest and is now focusing on his football at Pompey and helping the club.

Flattered

"Obviously I was very flattered by Steve Coppell's interest, but in the end I just followed my heart," he told The News.

"This is a great opportunity for me at Portsmouth and I've been made to feel very welcome by Steve Cotterill and all of his team.

"It's great to be focusing on my football again. This is a very exciting time for me and I can't wait for the new season to begin.

"I see this as a fresh start. I respect the interest the manager has shown in me and I want to reciprocate that out on the pitch."
