Bristol City have captured Jon Stead from Championship rivals Ipswich on a three-year deal.

The striker completed his switch after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical on Monday.

Stead joins for an undisclosed fee and - ironically - he is set to make his City debut this weekend against the Tractor Boys.

It is the latest footballing chapter for the 27-year-old who burst onto the scene with hometown club Huddersfield, netting 24 goals in 76 appearances.

This earned the hot-shot a £1.25m move to top flight Blackburn in 2004 before he switched to Sunderland for £1.8m a year later.

He spent a loan spell at Derby County before moving on to Sheffield United and then Ipswich Town.

He was loaned to Coventry last term but returned to Ipswich and was linked with a move to Premier League new-boys Blackpool before making Ashton Gate his new permanent home, with the deal subject to Football League clearance.
