Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan has slammed Manchester City for allowing Craig Bellamy to go out on loan to Cardiff.

The 31-year-old striker made his switch to the Bluebirds last week on a year-long deal, after falling down the pecking order at Eastlands under Roberto Mancini.

He marked his debut at the weekend by scoring one and setting up two as his hometown club put Doncaster to the sword and soundly beat them 4-0.

However, Rovers chairman Ryan believes the decision to allow Bellamy to leave on loan to a Championship side distorts the whole league, and says it is not a level playing field.

He told the Daily Mail: "Craig Bellamy's loan move to Cardiff will distort the integrity of the Championship. It is an incredibly competitive division.

"Handing a striker of Bellamy's quality to Cardiff - and paying most of his wages - undermines the sanctity of the competition. Manchester City shouldn't have done that. I feel let down by that, as do many other Championship chairmen.

"In no way do I blame Cardiff. I'd have been delighted to sign Craig at the Keepmoat, so it's not sour grapes. But if everyone goes to Cardiff and gets slammed 4-0 like us - and remember on-loan Bellamy scored one and set up two on Saturday - the result will be an unfair competition because Manchester City are bankrolling Cardiff's success."

Development

Ryan claims the loan system should be about developing young players and handing them the chance of first-team football, but is unhappy with the power of the Premier League.

"The loan system should be about sending out youngsters to become better footballers. That's what we do. Last year we took Jay Emmanuel-Thomas from Arsenal and Jordan Mutch from Birmingham," he added.

"There's no doubting that Bellamy will make Cardiff a better side, but no club in the Championship would be able to afford such a talent without the goodwill of the Premier League team.

"I say 'goodwill', but it's more about control. The control the Premier League elite have over the rest of football."

Dick Bennett (Arsenal fan) says...

cardiff fans will be delighted but how can they afford to have a player on loan of his calibre when they cant pay there bills ie motherwell. the football league should make them pay off the debt from increased revenues, before buying or selling players.

Simon De boltum (Manchester City fan) says...

Another example of a sore loser in management. He would not of complained if Craig had chosen a lowly side like Doncaster to ply his trade.

Is it the fact that he is a premier league player or a quality premier league player thats getting your back up. You wouldn''t be as noisy if the boot was on the other foot.

Mark Robertson (Leeds United fan) says...

I think Ryan''s comment are spot, don''t get me wrong i would have been over the moon had Bellamy decided to come to Elland Road, butecause Man City don''t want him to go to another prem club they would rather pay him to play in the championship. They are literally paying the way for Cardiff''s success, something which seems even more immoral considering Cardiff themselves couldnt find a couple of hundred thousand to pay Motherwell back for Paul Quinn!

Sg Sg (Arsenal fan) says...

So if it was the other way around he freely admits he would have loved it then says straight away ''its not sour grapes'' ? and continues to complain about it? with idiotic chairmen like this, no wonder it filtrates to the players and they act like sissies. It all starts from the top....

Robert Pearce (Cardiff City fan) says...

Wigan are lucky that they have Dave Whelan who is a supporter who got them where they are, the same for Blackburn when they won the premiership, we are lucky that Craig Bellamy is a Cardiff fan, arguably Liverpool are lucky that Gerrard is a Liverpool fan or he may have moved away when big offers came along...etc, etc, etc

So many things you can say about Ryan''s statement. Hypocrisy and jealousy rolled into one!

Mark Railton (Doncaster Rovers fan) says...

Deffo sour grapes. Instead of moaning JR should look at his own teams failings as one player doesnt win a game on his own. He is of undoubted class and the fact that Rovers defence is extremely frail hasnt helped trying to stop a player of that quality. Perhaps if JR had made sure players like Shackell and Roberts were not allowed to leave the keepmoat and be replaced with the likes of Friend, Martis and Hird then maybe the scoreline might have been closer. We hjave undoublty one of the best keepers and our midfield is a match for anybodys on the day. But the defence needs shoring up and Billy cant do it all on his own up front. Players like Shiels, Hayter and Brooker are not good enough to compliment the openings created by our midfielders. Sort it out now and admit that if Man City offered us one of their best and supplemented the wages you would snap their hands off as would any other chairman in that league. C,mon Rovers!!

Richard Bottomley (Leeds United fan) says...

The loan market is completely ruining the integrity of the championship. Its no longer about building a business and developing youngsters, you can simply borrow half a dozen premeirship players and get promoted, but what next season, when the premiership clubs won''t lend to you? Another problem is that the top clubs simply buy all the juniors showing promise and then loan them out for a few seasons to see if they develop. If they do, they have the stars of the future on the cheap. If not, they just release them and its cost virtually nothing.

Mark Ellis (Nottingham Forest fan) says...

What idiotic comments. It''s no different to Aston Villa loaning Marlon Harewood to Newcastle last season, or Reading loaning Nicky Shorey to Forest. Healthy competition is great for The Championship, It''s what makes it one of the best and most competitive league in the world. I have no problem with Craig Bellamy playing for Cardiff, no matter who pays for it, because it''s great for the league !

Tom Sensicall (Leicester City fan) says...

If doncaster had not played cardiff last saturday and got done over then John Ryan would have not made a comment like this that is F A C T !!!

Lewis Leatheam (Cardiff City fan) says...

What a jealous man! Bellamy is a Cardiff fan it was his decision to come to us, you can''t exactly blame him for not joining a Premier League side. I think it is brilliant that a top quality striker has dropped down a league, he will bring a rise in attendances in the Championship. Also with the new 25 man rule we start to see alot of players with Premier League qualities in the Championship, so I think alot of teams will start to get their share.

Posted 10:52 24th August 2010

Dan Walls (Derby County fan) says...

Nothing at all wrong with this loan deal. Premier League players play on loan in the Championship all the time. Fair play to Dave Jones and Cardiff for being able to pull off such a deal.

Posted 10:48 24th August 2010

Nathan Burris (Newcastle United fan) says...

It doesn''t matter what player plays in the Championship it depends on the team and how they play together. One player doesn''t make the team on his own everyone knows that. John Ryan has got sour grapes as his side took a hammering from Cardiff from playing a fantastic game and Doncaster got outclassed. what a great "TEAM" effort from the BlueBirds

Posted 10:47 24th August 2010

Jonathan Steel (Leeds United fan) says...

I think theres nothing wrong with signing a player of his quality. It would be a different storey if Doncaster had signed him besides its good for the league and Leeds as a result of that transfer we are on the brink of signing Ross McCormack which would be a excellent signing for us

Posted 10:39 24th August 2010

Sue Harris (Cardiff City fan) says...

Deffo sour grapes! Last week he said he wished the Bellamy had family in Doncaster and if that was the case they would have done the same thing and got him on loan!

Posted 10:19 24th August 2010

Keith Thomas (Cardiff City fan) says...

As this person admits he would have loved Craig Bellamy to have gone to his side his whole statement stinks of hypocracy and jealousy. Get used to it people we''ve pulled off the deal of the century, you didn''t!

Mmarc Pearce (Cardiff City fan) says...

Blame FIFA. With this 25 man squad thing, I can see class players being loaned out much more often.
