Striker Sam Vokes is confident that Bristol City have the ability to mount a serious push for promotion to the Premier League this season.

The 20-year-old striker, who is currently on loan from Wolves for the next five months, has endured a mixed start at Ashton Gate with the Robins picking up two points from their first three Championship games.

City's pre-season optimism fell flat following a shock defeat to Millwall on the opening day of the season and consecutive draws, against Doncaster and Barnsley have only lifted the club up to fourth from bottom.

The Welsh international, who is currently out with a hamstring injury, told skysports.com that City have what it takes to turn things around.

Strong team

"There is a very strong team down at Bristol City this year and both Steve Coppell and Keith Millen brought in some good players over the summer, so I don't think Steve's departure will change their targets too much this season," he said.

"A good start to the season isn't necessarily the be all or end all of things and I'm sure that they can turn it around soon."

The Hampshire-born forward managed just 13 minutes of his debut before being forced off with the hamstring injury and he admits feeling frustrated at not being able to help the Robins climb up the table.

"I've never really been injured for a long period of time before, so it has been frustrating to have picked it up so early on during my time here, but hopefully I can return and avoid injury again for a long time," he added.

"I'm just looking forward to going back to Bristol City and hopefully helping them rise up the table because the setup they have down there is worthy of competing for a top six finish this season."
