Craig Bellamy has vowed to keep his feet on the ground despite appearing to be a big fish in a small pond at loan club Cardiff City.

The Welshman dropped down a division to join his hometown team on a season-long loan amid reports parent club Manchester City refused to allow him to join a top Premier League side.

After making an impressive debut in which he scored a long-range free-kick against Doncaster Rovers last week, Cardiff fans have fresh optimism over their promotion hopes.

But Bellamy, who has signalled his wish to finish his career at the Bluebirds, has called for an end to the hype, reminding fans and himself that his presence does not guarantee promotion to the Premier League.

He told the Daily Post: "You have to be realistic. It all depends on how I play and how we do as a team. I'm just focusing on the year, doing well and getting promoted.

"If we don't get promoted to the Premier League and I don't have a particularly good year, how can I justify being here another year and how can Cardiff justify trying to keep me?

"If we are successful as a team and I'm successful it gives me a much stronger chance of being here for the rest of my career, I'd love to stay,"
