Manager George Burley expressed his disappointment after seeing Crystal Palace suffer their third successive Championship defeat.

Scunthorpe triumphed 3-0 on Saturday courtesy of a brace from Jonathan Forte and a Michael O'Connor penalty, leaving Palace on three points from their opening four matches.

And Burley, who signed Edgar Davids earlier this week, admits he may have to bolster his resources further if his side are to avoid a struggle this season.

"We are trying to rebuild this club and clearly there is a lot of hard work ahead of us," said Burley.

"We have used a lot of young players in the early games this season but perhaps now is the time to bring in some experience and that's what I will be trying to do in the next few days before the transfer window closes.

"We have got Edgar Davids here with us now and I'm sure he will have been disappointed after this performance because he's a winner.

"Scunthorpe were hungrier than us and deserved the victory that they got.

"We did okay in the early stages but then the game turned away from us when we lost our centre-half and skipper Patrick McCarthy when we had to pull him off because of illness.

"We then gave Scunthorpe two goals before half-time with some sloppy defending.

"We never really looked like getting back into the game in the second half and can have no complaints about the end result."

Thrilled

Iron boss Nigel Adkins was thrilled to see his side return to their winning ways following back-to-back losses.

"To be fair I thought Palace were the better team for the opening half-hour," said Adkins.

"We were slow to get going but then the substitution they had to make worked for us and against them.

"We found some extra room to work in and we scored two good goals before the interval to take command."

Adkins reserved special praise for Forte, whose brace paved the way for the Iron's victory.

"I'm really delighted for him," he added. "The past three seasons he's had to remain in the shadows while other players have been in the first team in front of him.

"But now he's got his opportunity and he's taken it with both hands.

"People wondered where the goals were going to come from this season but we have now scored seven in the last two games.

"This is an honest hardworking bunch of players and we played some excellent football in the second half, as indeed we have done for most of the season."
