Hull City are confident Anthony Gerrard is just the player they need after signing the Cardiff City defender on loan.

Gerrard joined the Tigers on a season-long deal on deadline day and will replace Anthony Gardner, who headed out to Crystal Palace.

The former Everton trainee has struggled to break into the Cardiff team this season, but Hull's head of football operations Adam Pearson is looking forward to seeing Gerrard in action.

"Anthony wears his heart on his sleeve and defends properly," Pearson told the Hull Daily Mail. "He's a no-risk, down-to-earth defender.

"He's a traditional English centre-half who will help bring out the best in the likes of Liam Cooper.

"He was a first choice last season with Cardiff, but for whatever reason hasn't started the new year in the side.

"He's an ambitious lad who just wants to play and I'm sure he's just what we need."

Gerrard is likely to make his Tigers debut against Cardiff after the international break after the two clubs also agreed to allow Seyi Olofinjana, who is on loan at the Bluebirds from Hull, to feature in the game.
