Middlesbrough midfielder Kevin Thomson is hopeful of an early return to action after fracturing his fibula last month.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury in a game against Leicester back in August and it was feared that he would be out of action for a couple of months.

However, the former Rangers man claims that he could be back to action a month earlier than expected.

He told the club's official website: "The lads have a double header coming up at QPR and at home to Burnley, but I would like to think I would be in contention for the game against Reading the Saturday after that.

"A lot depends on how things go over the next week to 10 days of course."

Thomson is determined to get back to action to help Boro revive their faltering early Championship season form in which the club have picked up four points from as many games.

"There have been a lot of expectations placed on the team," he said.

"Myself, I'm used to that expectation, I'm quite sure the other boys are as well, but it's a little more difficult when you have the label of 'favourites' placed on you and you don't get off to a good start.

"But the lads are confident in their own ability. We have a great manager with a great team and I'm pretty sure when the squad starts firing and we start scoring goals, results will follow, and fingers crossed that will come sooner rather than later."
