Sheffield United manager Gary Speed wants to sign a winger during the emergency loan window, according to chief executive Trevor Birch.

The new Blades boss did not want to rush in to any deal before last week's permanent transfer deadline, but he has been linked with Hull City's Peter Halmosi and the versatile James Vaughan of Everton.

Birch has refused to confirm names that will be targeted when the loan window reopens in the near future, but he has confirmed that Speed wants to add to his squad.

United's chief executive told The Star: "Out wide is where Gary predominately is looking.

"We'll be assisting him all we can and he's made it plain that he's got one or two people in mind."
