With the group of players we have got at the minute we are not anywhere near what is required to win promotion.

Billy Davies has told Nottingham Forest to forget about promotion this season after a nightmare transfer window.

The Reds boss has already written off his side's chances of securing Premier League football next term after claiming they are not good enough for a play-off place due to their inability to significantly strengthen over the summer.

Davies is lamenting his failure sign any of his top targets with only Ryan Bertrand arriving at the City Ground on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Forest were unable to lure the likes of Cardiff's Peter Whittingham and Swansea's Darren Pratley, while Nicky Shorey - who spent part of last season on loan - chose West Brom ahead of the East Midlanders.

And Davies does not believe his current squad can emulate last season's third-place finish this time around.

Shocked and stunned

He said: "I am shell-shocked and stunned - they are the two best words I could use.

"I am very disappointed for the fans. I was hoping that in my term at the club we would see a steady progression. Unfortunately, that isn't going to be the case.

"But when you look at the situation, we all knew that the agenda was to win promotion either this season or next.

"With the group of players we have got at the minute we are not anywhere near what is required to win promotion.

"It may be the same group of players, but this group over-achieved last season.

"And also since January this group of players have shown that there has been a clear decline in their performances."

Forest are still searching for their fist win in the Championship this season and were dumped out of the Carling Cup by League Two Bradford City.
