Skysports.com understands Birmingham City are closing in on the signing of former West Ham United utility player Jonathan Spector.

The 25-year-old is available on a free transfer after his contract at West Ham expired and he could now join Championship rivals Birmingham.

Spector, who can play in defence or midfield, made over 100 appearances for the Hammers during five years at Upton Park.

The former Manchester United youngster now has the option of a move to St Andrew's as Birmingham plot an immediate return to the Premier League.

Manager Chris Hughton is keen to continue rebuilding his squad and the acquisition of Spector would add versatility to his ranks.
