Steve Bruce has backed Nicky Butt to win over unhappy Birmingham supporters.

Butt upset Birmingham fans after walking out of the team prior to last month's game with West Ham after learning he was not going to be playing.

The former Manchester United star was fined for his actions and he was given a mixed reception by fans during Birmingham's win over Sunderland at St Andrews last weekend.

Bruce was pleased with Butt's attitude against Sunderland and is confident the on-loan midfielder will win over the disgruntled Birmingham fans.

"The Blues supporters will forgive Nicky when they see him produce the application and attitude he showed against Sunderland," said Bruce.

"He gave everything for the cause. If he does that, they will be okay with him.

"Yes, there were times when he gave the ball away and he made a mistake but he showed what a big player he is. He'll have a big impact over the next couple of weeks, I'm sure.

"He was involved in everything, broke up a lot of the play and handled the situation well. He got a mixed reaction when he came on but you would expect that. They will forgive him if they see him giving his all."

Bruce also revealed that the club have deals in line to sign Butt and Jiri Jarosik on a permanent basis from Newcastle and Chelsea respectively if they manage to stay up.

"Might Jiri have a long term future at Birmingham? Yes. There is a deal in place with Chelsea, all being well, to make the deal permanent," added Bruce.

"Both parties and the player have to be agreeing with that in the summer for it to happen. I'd like to keep him. We have to stay up that's for sure.

"Nicky is the same sort of thing as Jiri. If we stay up, there is a proviso for a deal to be done with Newcastle."
