Championship round-up

Cardiff City and Birmingham City both won while Preston North End were held by Southend.

Cardiff City extended their Championship lead to two points with Riccardo Scimeca's goal giving them a slender 1-0 success over Burnley.

Preston lost ground on The Bluebirds after being held to a goalless draw against bottom-of-the-table Southend at Roots Hall.

Birmingham City are now level with The Lilywhites after they beat Barnsley 2-0 at St Andrews.

In-form Gary McSheffrey put Blues ahead, although they had to wait until injury time until Neil Danns made the points safe.

Derby County are up into fifth after securing an impressive 2-1 victory over Coventry City at The Ricoh Arena.

Jon Stead's first goal for The Rams put the visitors in front although Stern John levelled matters for The Sky Blues.

However, Steve Howard's header after 76 minutes ensured Derby left with the three-point haul.

Stoke heaped more misery on Crystal Palace after Darel Russell's 38th minute goal gave The Potters a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park.
