Birmingham striker Garry O'Connor faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being forced to undergo surgery on his troublesome groin injury.

O'Connor has been struggling with the problem since suffering the injury against Queens Park Rangers in October.

It was hoped rest might cure the injury, but the club have now decided to send him under the knife, which will rule him for between six to eight weeks.

"I hope to be back as soon as possible," O'Connor told the club's official website. "The plan is the operation will solve the problem and I can get back to where I left off - scoring goals for Birmingham City. That's something I'd like to be doing for a few years to come.

"Hopefully I'll be back in no time at all and certainly involved in the business end of the season and the final push for promotion."

Blues boss Alex McLeish added: "We will now put Garry through his rehabilitation and look forward to having him fit and available for selection again."
