Alex McLeish has assured supporters that Birmingham are still in a good position to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Blues are currently second in the Championship table even though they have struggled for consistency in recent weeks.

McLeish accepts that his men have perhaps dropped more points than they should have, although he was encouraged by the 1-0 victory over Bristol City in midweek.

"We are in a very strong challenging position," the Birmingham boss told Sky Sports News.

"We believe we could be even better off just now if we had dealt with some games better than we have done.

"But we are all of the mind that this is a great position and we can do even better.

"The other night's performance against Bristol was an indication of that."

Guilty

McLeish admits that Birmingham have rarely played to their full potential and can understand why some fans may be frustrated.

He said: "Maybe we are expected to wipe the floor with a lot of teams, there is that side of it.

"Possibly they would have liked to see some better football played and if that's the thing we are guilty of then possibly we can say we could have played better.

"But I can't say we are doing badly. To be in the position we are in, we deserve some credit for that, despite not playing scintillating football."
