Andy Reid is refusing to get disheartened about Sunderland's recent slump towards the drop zone.

A 2-1 defeat at home to Wigan on Saturday has left the Black Cats precariously perched just three points above the relegation trapdoor with nine games remaining.

They have taken just two wins from their last 11 games and have failed to taste success in any of their last four.

Tensions are beginning to mount on Wearside as a result, but Reid remains optimistic that Ricky Sbragia's men can claw their way to Premier League safety.

"We've had plenty of good days recently and Saturday wasn't one of them," the Irish midfielder told the Sunderland Echo.

Positive

"We're all disappointed, but it's important we stay as positive as we can.

"We've got to look at what we didn't do, what didn't happen for us, put it right and take it into the next game.

"There's been plenty of positives over the last two or three months.

"We need to look back on them more than the negatives from Saturday's game.

"It's important not to let it run away with us and look on it as a one-off."
