Andy Reid insists Sunderland are not getting carried away with their impressive start to the new Premier League season.

Steve Bruce's dark horses find themselves sixth in the Premier League ladder following Saturday's 4-1 drubbing of Hull City.

Sunderland remain outsiders for a European place next season, although Reid is refusing to guess where they might finish the campaign.

The former Spurs and Charlton midfielder believes Bruce's side would only be setting themselves up for disappointment by setting a target.

Shot at

"There is no point saying we are going to finish here, we are going to finish there because you just put yourself there to be shot at," explained Reid.

"We will go about it as best we can, we will give everything we can in every game.

"One thing the fans did see out there aside from quality, they saw loads of tackles and commitment.

"That's what they demand and that's what we will give them."

Confidence

Reid only started against The Tigers as Kieron Richardson had to fill in at left-back and the 27-year-old insists regular football instils more confidence.

"I just want to play football and when I perform as well as I did on Saturday, without blowing my own trumpet or anything like that, I just want to play more and it breeds confidence," he continued.

"It's just about me going out and performing on the pitch. I know myself when I perform well, and I know myself when I don't perform well.

"I put pressure on myself to go out and do the job I need to do."
