Sunderland are closing in on the signing of Egyptian international Ahmed Al-Muhammadi, according to the player's club.

Al-Muhammadi has been a long-term target for Sunderland and he came close to a move to the Stadium of Light during the January transfer window only for his club, ENPPI, to pull the plug on the deal.

However, ENPPI promised to let the highly-rated right-sided player leave at the end of the season after attracting interest from a host of clubs.

Wigan and Blackburn were thought to be keen on signing Al-Muhammadi, but it appears Sunderland are set to win the chase to bring the 22-year-old to England.

ENPPI football director Alaa Abdul-Sadek claims Sunderland have agreed a deal, thought to be in the region of £2.5million, for the versatile performer.

"A Sunderland representative will come to Egypt after the end of the English Premier League to wrap up the deal," Abdul-Sadek told FilGoal.com.

Al-Muhammadi, who impressed in Egypt's friendly with England in March, is set to become Sunderland boss Steve Bruce's first signing of the summer as he plans to reshape the squad at the Stadium of Light.
