Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has admitted the importance of signing a top striker before the transfer window shuts.

The Black Cats sold Kenwyne Jones to Premier League rivals Stoke earlier this month for £8million and their only goals in two games this season have been a Darren Bent penalty and a Stephen Carr own goal.

On-loan Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, 19, and Martyn Waghorn, 20, are providing cover to Bent and Fraizer Campbell.

But Bruce accepts he must find a proven goal-getter to boost the Black Cats' strike-power and compensate for the loss of Jones.

Paramount

"It's absolutely paramount that I replace Kenwyne Jones,'' he told the Daily Star. "I've got to do it.

"We've got a couple of young lads in Danny Welbeck and Martyn Waghorn who will play their part, but they are young boys.

"I would not want to get to the end of the window without another striker here."

Bruce's prime target is believed to be Ghanaian World Cup star, Asamoah Gyan.

The 24-year-old Rennes striker is rated at £12m but Sunderland are yet to meet the French club's valuation.

"We have one or two irons in the fire, but unfortunately nothing is imminent," Bruce added.
