Steve Bruce is hoping to add to his squad before Tuesday, with a striker and Charles N'Zogbia still in his thoughts.

The Sunderland boss believes it is essential the Black Cats bolster their ranks before the transfer window closes if they are to build on a solid start to the season.

He was already in the market for a striker ahead of the weekend, having offloaded Kenwyne Jones to Stoke, but has now stepped up that search.

With Fraizer Campbell having sustained a potentially serious injury in Sunday's dramatic 1-0 win over Manchester City, Bruce knows he needs to reinforce.

Ghana international Asamoah Gyan could be the man to fill the void, with Sunderland admitting that they have lodged a club-record bid for the Rennes striker.

Bruce hopes something will happen there, but is confident chairman Niall Quinn and the Stadium of Light board will dig deep to find him a new frontman at some stage.

Imperative

He said: "It's imperative, the chairman knows that. It was imperative before we started, so if we are going to lose Fraizer for a few months, then we have got to try to act if we possibly can."

Bruce has also revealed that he could join the hunt for French winger Charles N'Zogbia, a player he worked with during his time at Wigan.

Birmingham came close to landing the £9million-rated midfielder in the week but with that deal having fallen through, the door has opened for Sunderland to make their move.

Bruce said: "I am a big admirer of Charles. That sort of money is a lot of money, but we will see, we will see whether we have got it.

"I'm a big admirer of him, but that sort of money might be too rich."

Paul Robinson (Sunderland fan) says...

he needs to get something done and get it done quickly....whilst yesterdays win was a good result and the team looked good...its not enough....last season he left us thread bare and 14 games without a win cost us dearly...whilst all the players that bruce has sold in his time as manager here needed to go it is no good not replacing them as he did last year.....if he doesn''t sign a midfielder and a striker by tuesday then i''m very pessamistic about the season....and please....no more defenders
