Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has revealed that Fraizer Campbell has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

The Blacks Cats striker suffered the injury during Sunday's 1-0 win over Manchester City and now that his knee has been assessed, it has been confirmed that the 22-year-old will be out for over six months.

Bruce was therefore eager to boost his attacking ranks before the transfer window shut and completed a club-record signing of Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan from French side Rennes on deadline day.

"The owners dug deep to make it happen and it became imperative after what happened with Frazier at the weekend," Bruce told Sky Sports News.

"We can confirm tonight that he has ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments so he's going to be out for at least six months.

Tragedy

"It's a tragedy. That's two we've had do their ACL now and after the window's shut we hope we're due a bit of luck.

"David Meyler did his in the last game of last season so that's two in five Premier League games and we don't need any more of that.

"Fraizer was just starting to show what he's about but make no mistake, he'll be back. He's a larger than life character and he'll be firing again."

Gyan, 24, has signed a four-year deal with the Black Cats paying a transfer fee of over £13million, which eclipses the £10m Sunderland spent on Darren Bent last summer.

Bruce was already looking for a new striker having sold Kenwyne Jones to Stoke for £8m last month and Gyan becomes his 10th permanent signing since taking over last summer.

"A lot of people worked extremely hard and thankfully we've got him," Bruce said.

"It's a hell of a lot of money, we all know that in today's climate. But fair play to the owner, he understood the necessity of it and it's a fantastic signing for us.

"It's just at the right time. We had a good result at the weekend and we've managed to bring in another top-class striker.

Patient

"It's amazing that it's come down to the last day that we've pulled off the club-record signing.

"We've had to be patient - I didn't think it was going to be possible two weeks ago - but we've got it through. It's a great piece of business for us and we're all delighted.

"I tried to sign him last summer but it wasn't possible," added the Black Cats' boss.

"I love his enthusiasm. He has a huge appetite for the game, works extremely hard and will give us something different which we haven't got.

"He can complement Darren Bent and Danny Welbeck. He leads the line, he's a traditional number nine and we'll benefit from that."
