New signings lift Davies

Billy Davies was happy with the impact of his new signings after Derby County sealed a last-gasp win over Sheffield Wednesday.

David Jones - a recent permanent capture from Manchester United - curled home an injury-time free-kick to move The Rams level on points with Championship leaders Birmingham City.

Derby boss Davies was not surprised by the midfielder's set-piece, and was also lifted by the debut displays of Gary Teale, Craig Fagan and Stephen Pearson.

"I wasn't surprised at all," said Davies of Jones' free-kick. "He does it on the training ground every day.

"I was delighted with Teale, he gives us a threat down the flanks, he causes a problem or two for defences.

"Pearson and Fagan made an impact when they came on. They showed athleticism and can join in in the final third of the field.

"They certainly join in and cause a problem or two. It will take them time to gel, it will take them three or four games to find their feet."

Wednesday manager Brian Laws felt his side were unlucky not to leave Pride Park with at least a point for their efforts.

Laws said: "I thought that any football that was played was played by Sheffield Wednesday.

"It was just the pass in the final third that let us down. Apart from that, we were excellent."

Laws also revealed he is not looking to follow the example of Davies by rushing into the transfer market.

He added: "When you spend money, you have got to spend it for the right reasons.

"They have got to be better than what we have got. It would take some player to do better than what we have got at the moment."
