Wrexham have confirmed that they have failed with a bid to take Robbie Savage from Derby County.

The 33-year-old former Welsh international was born in Wrexham and he has always harboured a dream to play for his hometown club.

But The Dragons have stated that the deal has collapsed, claiming Derby pulled the plug on the potential move for the midfielder.

"It looked likely we would have been able to bring in Robbie on loan, especially with a couple of players out injured at the moment," Wrexham chairman Geoff Moss told the club's website.

"The player was keen on the opportunity and it seemed to be within our finances to allow us to bring him in, but unfortunately there seems to have been a problem, which has meant the deal will now not go head.

"It's a shame for Robbie, who was all for the idea, and we certainly could have done with someone of his quality in our squad.

"We do though thank everyone for their efforts in trying to complete the deal."

Brighton deal?

However, Derby boss Paul Jewell claims Savage can move to whichever clubs he wants - with Brighton now looking favourites to land the player.

"I spoke to [Brighton boss] Micky Adams and he is still interested in taking Sav to Brighton on loan," said Jewell.

"Sav has got one or two other irons in the fire but there is nothing in the Crewe thing at all. I have had no contact from Crewe, so as far as I am concerned he won't be going to Crewe.

"Brighton want him and he has got another club interested in him, and we'll have to wait and see. It will be Robbie's decision."
