West Brom and Nottingham Forest both kept pace with leaders Newcastle in the Championship after claiming victories on Saturday.

Newcastle cruised past fourth placed Cardiff on Friday evening, but neither West Brom or Forest allowed the North East club to move out of their sights.

West Brom claimed all three points at Plymouth, but were forced to work hard for a 1-0 win Home Park.

The only goal of the game arrived just after the hour when Simon Cox fired home from close range.

West Brom could even afford a late penalty miss, as Graham Dorrans failed to convert after Luke Moore was brought down. Jerome Thomas was also sent-off in stoppage time for the Baggies.

Forest were also forced to work for their three points against Sheffield Wednesday at the City Ground.

Dexter Blackstock's first-half penalty gave Forest the lead before Luke Varney levelled with 17 minutes left for the Owls.

But Billy Davies' side claimed maximum spoils as Blackstock grabbed his second goal.

Swansea moved level with Cardiff in fourth after a 2-0 win over Preston in the day's early kick-off.

Sheffield United failed to consolidate their place in the play-off places as they were held 1-1 at home by Derby County.

The opener at Bramall lane arrived after just 17 minutes when veteran Robbie Savage converted.

But just as the Rams looked set to claim victory, Lee Williamson fired home to claim a point for the Blades.

Ian Holloway's Blackpool could have been the ones to move into the play-off places, but instead it is Leicester who climb to seventh after they claimed a 2-1 win at Bloomfield Road.

Stephen Dobbie pulled one back for Blackpool in the final minute, but it proved to be a consolation.

Middlesbrough came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with Ipswich at Portman Road.

Debutant Daryl Murphy made the perfect start to his Town career as he scored after just 60 seconds - but Boro levelled midway through the second-half as David Wheater headed home.

Bristol City grabbed a late equaliser to claim a 1-1 draw with Coventry at Ashton Gate.

David Bell put Coventry ahead just after the break, but Gary Johnson's men sealed a point thank to David Clarkson's goal just seven minutes from time.

Crystal Palace grabbed a last-gasp victory at Scunthorpe United to move them further away from trouble and above the Iron in the table.

After a goalless first-half Darren Ambrose put Palace ahead just after the hour, and then Scunthorpe were reduced to 10 men when Marcus Williams was dismissed.

Despite having a man less, the home side managed to level through David Mirfin.

But Nigel Adkins' side could not hang on as Neil Danns fired home in stoppage time. If Palace had not lost the 10 points for going into administration, they would have been sitting in fifth.

Peterborough handed new boss Jim Gannon a great start to life in charge at London Road as they claimed a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers.

The winner arrived on nine minutes when Aaron McLean fired home.

QPR will bemoan the fact they finished the match with nine men as Mikele Leigertwood and Peter Ramage were both sent off in the second half.

Later in the day, Reading secured their second successive win with a 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Shane Long and Brian Howard combined with a goal and an assist each before Mathew Mills saw red for handball late on, prompting Billy Sharp to pull one back for the hosts from the spot.
