Newcastle United extended their lead at the top of the Championship table to six points after a 2-1 win at Watford, as West Brom moved back above Nottingham Forest into second.

The high-flying Magpies were ahead after just four minutes at Vicarage Road as Fabricio Coloccini headed home.

The win was sealed shortly after the break when Andy Carroll flicked the ball home at the near post. Will Hoskins grabbed a consolation for the Hornets in injury time.

Newcastle's lead was extended as Nottingham Forest suffered a 3-0 defeat at Leicester in the East Midlands derby.

The opening goal at the Walkers Stadium arrived on 68 minutes as Bruno Berner pounced from close range, before Paul Gallagher and Andy King sealed a comfortable win.

West Brom took the chance to move back above Forest into second as they came from behind to beat Derby 3-1 at the Hawthorns.

Chris Porter had put Derby ahead just after the break, but a brace from Chris Brunt put Roberto Di Matteo's side ahead before Simon Cox slotted home to seal the win.

Swansea stay fourth as they beat bottom-of-the-table Peterborough 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium with David Cotterill slotting home the winner form the penalty spot after 19 minutes.

Tight

Cardiff remain in sixth, but they are now adrift of the top five after they were well beaten 3-0 at Preston North End.

A brace from Jon Parkin and a Chris Brown goal sealed the victory for Darren Ferguson's men, who also had Paul Coutts dismissed.

Blackpool missed the chance to move back into the play-off places as they were beaten 1-0 at Barnsley.

A tight affair at Oakwell was decided by Iain Hume's goal just 15 minutes from time.

Sheffield United got their push for the play-offs back on track as they claimed a hard fought 4-3 victory over second-from-bottom Plymouth.

Henri Camara and a brace from Jamie Ward put the home side in control, before Yannick Bolasie pulled one back for Plymouth.

Joe Mason then hit a second for Argyle, before Richard Cresswell added a fourth for United.

But there was still time for Plymouth to score again through Jamie Mackie - however, the home side managed to hang on to secure the win.

Middlesbrough claimed their third successive home victory with a 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at the Riverside.

Both goals came from the penalty spot, and both were converted in the first half by Barry Robson.

Coventry closed to within four points of the play-off places as they claimed a 2-1 win over Scunthorpe at the Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues went ahead just after the break when Jon Stead scored on his home debut.

Then Leon Barnett was sent off on the hour as he tripped Gary Hooper in the box, but the striker then missed the resulting penalty.

Despite being down to 10 men, Sammy Clingan doubled the lead for Chris Coleman's side on 68 minutes.

Grant McCann pulled one back for the Iron, but they could not find an equaliser.

Emphatic

Reading returned to winning ways in emphatic style as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 5-0 at the Madjeski Stadium.

The Royals took the lead just moments before the break through Jimmy Kebe and the floodgates opened in the second half as Wednesday capitulated.

Kebe scored again before Grzergorz Rasiak added two and Simon Church scored.

Wednesday's loss saw them drop back into the bottom-three as Crystal Palace climbed out of the relegation places after a 1-1 draw at Doncaster.

Rovers had gone ahead through James Coppinger, but Kieran Djilali pounced to seal a point for the Eagles.

Finally, Ipswich and Bristol City played out a goalless draw at Portman Road.
