Ashley Young and John Carew both found the net as Aston Villa claimed a 3-2 victory over Peterborough United in Monday night's friendly at London Road.

Eager to bounce back from Sunday's shock 2-1 loss to Blue Square South side Basingstoke, Villa boss Martin O'Neill fielded a much stronger team against Gary Johnson's League One side.

As well as Young and fellow goalscorer Carew, O'Neill selected Brad Friedel, Richard Dunne, Stiliyan Petrov and Stuart Downing in his starting XI.

Villa made the breakthrough after nine minutes when Young executed a deft lob to perfection to leave Posh goalkeeper Joe Lewis with no chance.

Peterborough new-boy Arron Davies equalised just two minutes later, however, Carew's backheel gave Villa a slender half-time advantage.

Villa started the second half strongly and effectively put the game beyond their opponents when right-back Eric Lichaj powered in a header just before the hour mark.

The home side kept fighting and ensured a tense finish when Charlie Lee found the back of the net with 20 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, Championship title favourites Middlesbrough were held to a 1-1 draw against Athlone Town as Kris Boyd's opener was cancelled out by Austin Skelly.

Derby and Southend could not be separated as they drew 1-1 following a Rob Hulse header and a Matt Paterson penalty.

Billy Kee stole the show with five goals as Torquay thrashed Southern League outfit Tiverton Town 8-0.
