Liverpool were held 0-0 by Grasshoppers in Roy Hodgson's first game as manager, while Arsenal secured a 3-0 win over Sturm Graz.

A youthful Reds team failed to create clear scoring opportunities, with striker David Ngog wasting two good chances while a free-kick from Alberto Aquilani was palmed away by Ivan Benito.

French midfielder Samir Nasri netted two goals to help seal Arsenal's victory, while substitute Henri Lansbury added a third.

Nasri, who also scored in the 4-0 win over Barnet on Saturday, was on target with a strike after 16 minutes to put Arsene Wenger's men in the lead, then added a second just before half-time with a curling free-kick.

Lansbury then completed the triumph after 57 minutes to end a disappointing night for the Austrian Cup holders.

Equaliser

Fraizer Campbell seized a late equaliser for Sunderland as they drew 1-1 with Brighton in the Algarve, while Garry O'Connor was Birmingham's match-winner as the Blues claimed a 1-0 victory over Beijing Guoan.

There was action aplenty at Bournemouth as they held Derby to a 3-3 draw.

And Huddersfield were celebrating after upsetting Premier League club Blackburn 1-0 in front of a home crowd.

But it was doom and gloom for Nottingham Forest, who endured a 2-0 loss to League Two club Tranmere Rovers.

Barnet also secured an upset as they saw off Championship club Watford 1-0 at home, while Colchester's clash away to Lowestoft Town ended in a 0-0 draw.

Coventry landed a 1-0 away win at Northampton, while Torquay saw off Bristol City 2-1 at home.
