Liverpool's preparations for the start of the competitive season were hit as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kaiserslautern in Germany.

Chris Martin gave Norwich a first half lead before Shola Ameobi equalised in the second period.

Martin headed the winner for Norwich to give Paul Lambert's side a morale-boosting win.

West Brom continued their unbeaten run in pre-season with a 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers with Graham Dorrans heading home the only goal of the game, while Midlands rivals Wolves sealed a 2-1 win over Beglium side Charleroi.

Birmingham ended their tour of China and Hong Kong with a 2-0 victory against Liaoning Hongyun.

Goals from Garry O'Connor and Sebastian Larsson were enough to give Alex McLeish's men the victory to make it three wins out of three from their summer trip east.

Fraizer Campbell scored four times against his former club as Sunderland beat Hull City4-2 in Portugal.

Campbell opened the scoring after 10 minutes and then netted three more before half-time after Craig Fagan had equalised from the penalty spot. Nick Barmby grabbed a late consolation for Hull.

Elsewhere, non-league Braintree Town held League One opponents Colchester to a 0-0 stalemate and Tranmere could only draw 1-1 at Mansfield.

Crewe enjoyed a five-star showing at local neighbours Nantwich Town, winning 5-0, as Lee Hughes struck twice to give Notts County a 2-1 win over Cardiff City.

Leicester drew 1-1 at Oxford and George Boyd put the knife into his former club by helping Peterborough to a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Boyd spent time at Forest last season on-loan but was on hand to help Posh to victory at London Road.

Barry Conlon netted his first goal for Stockport in their 1-0 win over Skelmersdale, Dagenham & Redbridge saw off Staines by the same score. Southampton drew 1-1 with Sutton.
