Sheffield Wednesday, Preston and Wolves all crashed out to lower league opposition on a dramatic night in the Carling Cup.
Wrexham are unbeaten in League Two so far this season and proved their good form was no fluke with a crushing 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Two goals within the space of six minutes from Neil Roberts (33) and Chris Llewellyn (39) set The Red Dragons on their way for a famous upset.
Not content with just beating a team two divisions higher than them though, further goals from Matt Done (65) and Mark Jones (84) sealed a crushing margin of victory. Glenn Whelan (79) grabbed The Owls' consolation.
Port Vale have been going superbly in League One, and extended their season record to five wins out of five with a 2-1 victory over Preston.
Akpo Sodje's opener (52) was cancelled out by Simon Whaley's strike (72), but eight minutes from time Leon Constantine netted the vital goal for The Valiants.
Wolves bowed out to Chesterfield on penalties at Saltergate.
After an uninspiring 0-0 draw The Spireites kept their cool to edge into the next round 6-5 on penalties.
Southampton eased into the second round with a 5-2 victory over Yeovil, to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Saints broke the deadlock courtesy of Mark Lynch's own goal, but Yeovil were soon level through Wayne Gray (30).
However, the Championship side were in no mood for a nervous night and powered through with further goals from Rudi Skacel (32), Bradley Wright-Phillips (37), Nathan Dyer (69) and Kenwyne Jones (78).
Matt Harrold scored in stoppage time to restore a modicum of pride to the scoreline for Yeovil.
Norwich also ran out comfortable winners at Plainmoor, with second half goals from Leon McKenzie (48) and Dickson Etuhu (64) consigning Torquay to a 2-0 defeat.
Brighton also beat Boston 1-0 thanks to Paul Reid's cool finish on 73 minutes.
