Defender could step down to League One with Brown's men

Skysports.com understands that Preston are poised to sign Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle.

Carlisle: Could leave Burnley

The centre-back played 41 games for the Championship Clarets last season, but could still drop down to League One.

Carlisle has been tempted by a move to Phil Brown's Preston, who have gone to Scotland to undergo some fitness training in pre-season.

The 31-year-old was a part of the Burnley team that played in the Premier League in 2009/10 and would therefore bring significant experience to Deepdale.

Defender Sean St Ledger has moved to Leicester so Brown also needs to bring in some cover.
