Preston boss Phil Brown has invited free agent El Hadji Diouf to train with the club to maintain his fitness, but stressed that the former Blackburn forward will not be signing a deal at Deepdale.

Diouf left Rovers by mutual consent last week after an agreement was reached with manager Steve Kean to terminate his contract six months early.

The 30-year-old is therefore looking for a new club and he has been given the opportunity to link up with Preston for training.

Brown worked as assistant manager at Bolton when Diouf moved to the Reebok Stadium from Liverpool in 2004 and remains an admirer of the player.

However, he has made it clear that the former Senegal international's wages would be well out of Preston's reach.

"Diouf is a good friend of mine and he's keeping himself fit here," Brown told the Lancashire Evening Post.

Win-win

"Blackburn paid his contract up last week and now he's a free agent. I should think that, as a free agent, he'll be a very valuable asset for someone.

"What people must realise is that Diouf is not here because we're signing him.

"If I could sign him, we'd be on to an absolute winner, but that's not the reason for us working together.

"It's a win-win situation as far as I see it. Diouf is working to keep himself fit until he gets himself fixed up with a new club, and we're getting the benefit of having a very talented player training with us for a short while.

"We were together at Bolton and he's someone I've always seen eye-to-eye with."
