BAGGIES STRIKERS CLEARED OF ASSAULT

WEST BROM strikers Jason Roberts and Lee Hughes have been cleared of assaulting a Dudley man last month.

The 22-year-old man claimed the players attacked him near a cashpoint machine in Waterfront East on August 28, but a police spokesman revealed the charges have been dropped.

"The players were interviewed with the club solicitor on the day after the alleged attack and as a result of our inquiries no further action is to be taken.

"The players, the club and their solicitors have been informed of that. The person who made the complaint does not wish to proceed. No one is facing any charges from the incident."

Albion secretary Dr John Evans said he was always confident the strikers would be cleared of any wrongdoing.

"The players were open with us. We knew from the outset that they were telling the truth," Evans said.

"There was plenty of evidence to show that this allegation was nonsense in our opinion. The whole thing has now been scrapped."
