West Brom have welcomed the news that Do-Heon Kim will be available for the start of the new season.

The Baggies had feared that the South Korean star would be chosen to represent his country at the upcoming Olympics, but the midfielder has been omitted from the squad.

Albion are already resigned to losing summer signing Gianni Zuiverloon to the Beijing games, as the youngster has been called up by Holland.

The Dutchman will definitely miss the season opener away at Arsenal, while he could be unavailable for a number of games after that.

West Brom assistant manager Mark Venus admitted that the club could ill-afford to lose any more members of their squad at a crucial stage of the season, and is delighted that Kim will be in contention for their return to top-flight action.

Selfish

"We've already lost one player to the Olympics and if we're being selfish then we are glad Kim is staying here," he said.

"We would have understood if that wasn't the case but it's good for us that he's staying here, can train with us, show the manager his talent and get ready for the Premier League.

"You can see the quality he's got on the ball and he's still adapting to the pace of English football but it's about the team getting used to him and him getting used to the team.

"Once that happens and he gels he will be a good player and addition to this football club."

Technical

Venus added: "When Kim came here we knew he had talent. It's not easy for these kind of players to adapt to English football but he has a great attitude.

"He competes, he does everything right so we are pleased he's getting up to speed and is working hard in pre-season.

"I think the Premier League will suit him more than the Championship because the game is more spread out and more technical.

"If he keeps playing as well as he is then he will give the manager a nice problem."
