Paul Robinson believes his West Brom team-mate Scott Carson should be handed an England recall for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Carson has not featured for the national side since a costly error during a 3-2 defeat against Croatia in November 2007 cost the Three Lions a place at Euro 2008, and Steve McClaren his job.

The 23-year-old suffered a severe confidence crisis in the wake of the high-profile mistake, looking a shadow of his former self during the remainder of his loan spell at Aston Villa.

However, having resolved his long-term future by securing a switch to West Brom from Liverpool over the summer, he has rediscovered his form and is pushing for a return to the international fold.

Robinson said: "Without a doubt Scott is in the right sort of form and, if he is not in the England squad, I will be shocked.

"For some reason, some of the players in the England squads are not playing regular football. For me people getting picked should be playing week in and week out in the Premier League for their clubs.

Gutted

"We've got some fantastic players in this country and, if Scott is not in the England squad, I will be absolutely gutted for him. He has been first class since coming here.

"If England are going to keep looking back to what has happened before (against Croatia) it will be their loss as much as his.

"Him coming here has been to our gain and it would be England's loss if they leave him out.

"What happened against Croatia is in the past. For players like Scott, things like that are over straightaway.

"That's the way it should be. Mistakes happen but you forget about them and get on with things. By the way he is playing, you can tell Scott is confident and enjoying his football."
