West Brom boss Tony Mowbray says his team can hold their head high - despite losing 4-0 at Manchester United.

Second half goals from Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dimitar Berbatov and Nani gave the reigning champions a convincing win, but Mowbray was not too disheartened.

"That is what can happen in matches like this," said the Baggies boss.

"It's only the top four who can score in this division. Obviously we can score too, but the only ones who are scoring week in and week out are the top four.

"I don't want to turn this into a thing about money, but we are coming up against teams who can spend £30million on strikers, which is where it matters.

"There is no shame in the result for us. Wayne Rooney is a world-class player - and they have five or six of them."

Constant reminders

The Baggies manager added that his side were constantly being reminded of the step up they have made since their promotion from the Championship.

He added: "As I said last week against Fulham, you can really feel the quality of the Premier League. And to come to United, well it's a different level to 90-odd per cent of the teams in the division.

"The quality, especially in the front areas of the pitch, is very evident at times and despite it being 0-0 for 50 minutes, it was always likely to hurt us, and ultimately it did.

"We were perhaps guilty of some naive defending in the last 20 minutes or so but generally there were good positives in the performance."
