Roberto Di Matteo has hit back at suggestions he lacks experience after being appointed the new manager of West Bromwich Albion.

The former Chelsea and Italy midfielder has left Milton Keynes Dons to succeed Tony Mowbray at The Hawthorns after spending just under a year with the League One outfit.

Critics have questioned whether Di Matteo has the necessary know-how to help West Brom earn an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation to the Championship.

But the 39-year-old, who was praised for his aesthetic style of play with MK Dons, has admitted his gratitude to Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace for offering the opportunity and is confident he can meet standards.

Proud

"I am very proud to be here," he told a press conference shown on Sky Sports News.

"I think I am joining a club with a long history and a very ambitious club with great supporters.

"I would like to thank the chairman for having the confidence to appoint me because I know that a lot of people have some concerns about my lack of experience.

"We will see by the end of the season where I can take this club.

"I am confident with this set of players that we can do a good job and be very competitive."
