Cech: Now happy at West Brom
Marek Cech admits he was 'really, really close' to leaving West Bromwich Albion in the summer, but is now enjoying a new lease of life under Roberto Di Matteo.
The versatile Slovakia international joined the Baggies in 2008 from Porto, but started only three games in the Premier League last season.
He was wanted by several clubs during the summer and Cech acknowledges that he was tempted to move following the departure of former manager Tony Mowbray to Celtic.
"In the summer I was really, really close to leaving," said Cech. "I was really depressed.
"The previous year had been very frustrating for me. I was just waiting for the summer to come.
"I spoke to the chairman. I knew there were three offers in for me. Clubs were willing to pay what Albion paid for me and treat me well.
"But the chairman would not let me go. He told me to wait for the new manager. It was very frustrating."
The 26-year-old has grasped his chance since Di Matteo took charge of the Baggies and he scored twice in Saturday's 3-1 home win over Plymouth.
He added: "I spoke to the manager and he changed everything for me, not just on the field but off it too.
"The manager made me happy. He has been very good. He showed me the other side of life.
"I love the role I am playing. Now I want to help get Albion back into the Premier League."
