West Bromwich Albion defender Gabriel Tamas has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association following an incident towards the end of the 1-0 win at Norwich City.

Tamas tangled with Vaughan in the penalty area at Carrow Road and caught the Canaries striker with his arm.

The Romanian centre-half has been given until 6pm on Tuesday to respond to the charge and, if he admits to it, will face an automatic three-match suspension.

Vaughan was taken to hospital after the game and required treatment after suffering a nasty gash to his lip in the challenge.

Speaking after the match, Norwich boss Paul Lambert was critical of referee Mark Halsey's decision not to award a penalty for the incident.

Bad one

"I think it was a penalty," said Lambert. "I have seen it on tape and he has caught him.

"James has gone to see the plastic surgeon at the minute and it is a bad one.

"It has gone straight through his lip and they can't stitch it up, the specialist has got to look at it."

However, West Brom boss Hodgson defended Tamas and insisted it was not a deliberate elbow on Vaughan.

Hodgson said: "In real time I had no view, and I looked at the video - but it is accidental - he caught him but it was unintentional.

"He could be accused of a clumsy turn but that is it - he [Vaughan] has my sympathy as it hurts whether it is meant or not."
