Wolves striker Jay Bothroyd has insisted he did not have a trial with Crystal Palace last summer.

Bothroyd scored twice as Wolves claimed a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday, taking his tally to four goals in two games.

Palace boss Peter Taylor claimed after the game that 'Bothroyd spent pre-season with us and we decided not to offer him a contract'.

However, Bothroyd has clarified that he was never actually on trial with Palace, and only trained with the London club as a favour to a friend.

"I did not have a trial with Palace," Bothroyd, who left Charlton at the end of last season and joined Wolves in July, said in The Sun.

"I already had a few offers from Premiership clubs but I decided to come here and train with a mutual friend.

"I had no intention of signing because there were other big teams interested in me."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy praised Bothroyd's display, although for the second game in succession he was substituted before the end after scoring two goals.

"When he is fitter he will play a little bit more," McCarthy explained.

"But it was a good performance and two perfect goals."
