Wolves manager Mick McCarthy admitted lapses in concentration had cost his side dearly in their 1-0 defeat at Bolton.

Zat Knight's strike on the stroke of half-time secured maximum points for the Trotters but McCarthy felt his side were worthy of at least a point at the Reebok.

David Jones and Kevin Foley both hit the woodwork after the break but Bolton hung on resolutely and that result means McCarthy's side escaped falling into the relegation zone on goal difference only.

The Irishman said: "Playing well doesn't always get you points, does it? We switched off just before half-time.

"We have made mistakes and it has cost us the game. The goal we conceded wasn't bad luck, it was bad defending."

In the balance

McCarthy was disappointed that his side had failed to convert any of their opportunities and accepts their top-flight status is hanging in the balance.

"We had good deliveries from corners and free-kicks, and somebody's got to get on the end of them," he added.

"You might say it was bad luck with those two efforts that hit the post, but we had other chances and we haven't taken them.

"Our predicament still remains the same. We need a certain amount of points with 11 games left to stay in this league. Can we get those points? That remains to be seen.

"We will keep trying, keep plugging away. We are in there fighting and that gives us a chance."
